A septic system is a small, on-site sewage treatment and disposal system buried in the ground. It consists of four essential parts.
Septic System Components and Functions
1. Sewer Line
Connects the home’s plumbing to the septic tank.
2. Septic Tank
Receives household wastewater from the sewer line. Three layers are formed here.
3. Distribution Box
Directs the flow of wastewater from the septic tank to the drain field lines.
4. Drain Field Lines
Pipes - usually perforated - through which wastewater flows down through a layer of gravel and into the soil.
